Grief Counseling is used to help individuals experiencing a loss to process the situation, examine their cognitive responses to the loss, and cope with change. The psychotherapist provides psychoeducation on the grieving process, while providing support and allowing the individual to express their feelings related to the loss they have experienced. Additionally, in Grief Counseling, the individual explores or develops a new sense of being after the loss. Grief Counseling is often referred to as being for people who have lost a loved one due to death, but can also be used in treating other forms of losses that can occur due to divorce, job loss, and loss of one’s home, to name a few.
